Marius was born on 18th December 1984, in Craiova.
After 48 years, He is the first Romanian male athlete to participate in the Olympic Marathon. Marius began with athletics at the age of 11 when he chose running over football.
He immediately became an important figure in the Romanian Junior Athletics with several national titles in different events (track & field, cross country). His major breakthrough came in 2003 when he won 2 medals in the European Junior Championships (gold-10000m, silver-5000m). Since then he has moved from track races to road races, with a stunning debut in the
Rotterdam Marathon in 2011, where he made his standard for the World Championship. At the World Championships he finished with a new personal best and did the standard for the
2012 London Olympic Games. He finished 26th in the Olympic Marathon after a race where he was not able to give his best because of stomach problems.

Alongside Alexandru Corneschi and Sergiu Ciobanu, Marius Ionescu ran the relay event from Bucharest Half-Marathon, their team, GoldNutrition Romania finished on the first place, the clock stopped at the end at 1.03.52. All three members had to run almost equal distances, 7 kilometers each. Has been a good test, a good race, thoughts are now towards World Championship in Athletics (London).
Marius Ionescu finished this year the windy Alphen aan den Rijn 20k race, Netherlands, on the third place, after he stop the clock at 64.11. Is it for the third time when Marius finishes in top 3, after the last two years when he won the race, 61.27 in 2015 and 61.10 in 2016 (personal record for the distance).
